Have lofty aspirations for spring cleaning but secretly know that you'll simply revert to your usual routines? Likewise.
Thankfully, there are those who enjoy bringing order to the turmoil. Among them is Kimberly Stewart, the creator of The Realm by Kimberly Stewart. We therefore asked for advice on how to begin organising and, more crucially, how to continue.
Maintaining consistency is difficult. "It's a decision," she says. However, we always like to in still and remind ourselves and our clients of the mindset of wanting to and attempting. It begins with the desire to change and the implementation of minor adjustments that position you for success.
Kimberly offers her best picks below.
1. Begin by purging.
Kimberly says, "We always love to start with a good purge and then a deep clean when it comes to your home." It enables you to mentally list all of your possessions, items you use, and anything unique you wish to preserve. Additionally, this is the time to get rid of everything that you no longer need or have outgrown.
2. Assign a home to everything.
"We find a home for those pieces, whether it's designated drawers, closet space, etc., once we categorise everything we want to keep," she explains. Bins are quite useful to us since they give everything a home and serve as a reminder that everything has a place to be put away. Keeping things in their proper position helps you stay consistent.
3. Adhere to your personal style.
Less is always better for us at The Realm because we're minimalists. A major motivator to keep things neat is the desire to maintain aesthetics. Kimberly advises sticking to organising things that reflect your own style and make you feel good whether they are put away or exhibited. Glass, wood, natural fibres, black and white, or anything else that appeals to you.
Because it makes their lives easier, makes things easy to find, looks good, and they are proud of it, we find that our clients maintain their organisation. Being proud of something makes you naturally want to maintain it, which keeps you on track with your schedule.
4. Get rid of the mess.
You become more conscious of what you let or bring back into your personal space when you clear out clutter and purge. "I think it's a big wake-up call to see the things that are expired or not being used," she says. People try to leave as little of an impact as possible and don't consider themselves wasteful, so it's really eye-opening. You release something. Perhaps you'll find that you can get by without it, or you'll replace it when necessary. Developing mindfulness undoubtedly aids in maintaining consistency.
5. Apply colour coding.
Colour coding your closets from light to dark and short to lengthy lengths helps you visually keep track of everything you own. And it makes it easier to put things back once you've worn them," she continues. "The goal is to set up systems that make things easy to put away while being used consistently."
